Span™ system and HDL300 system give students natural collaboration experience
Nureva Inc., an award-winning collaboration-solutions company, announces its first trans-Atlantic student collaboration project using its Span visual collaboration system and HDL300 audio conferencing system. The project kicked off in December and involves 4th-grade students from Pheasey Park Farm Primary School in Birmingham, UK, working with 12th-grade students from Riverview High School in New Brunswick, Canada, in six sessions over three months. The goal is to help students build communication and collaboration skills by exchanging ideas about how artificial intelligence and other technological innovations will impact their lives. The older students were brought together with the younger students to explore their divergent views when discussing these complex topics. For example, the high school students draw on their scientific knowledge and the younger students rely on their creative curiosity. Despite the more than 2,485-miles (4,000-kilometer) distance between them, the students are working together in a natural and engaged way. This has made for a powerful dynamic that is resulting in deeper learning for everyone.
Each learning space is equipped with a 20′ 2″ (6.16 m) wide Span system and an HDL300 system that enables them to easily share and discuss their ideas. The 60 students from Pheasey Park and Riverview post their ideas and photos to a Span canvas in the cloud. Students see all the contributions instantly and interact with the information in real time. Together, they sort, combine and debate ideas as if they were working in the same room. This takes place while the HDL300 system fills each learning space with 8,192 virtual microphones, picking up every voice to ensure all of the students can be heard. The students explore timely and complex questions such as what it means to be human and what makes something alive. In past projects, students had to take turns speaking into a microphone, which made the conversations less natural and didn’t allow for the impromptu comments and questions that often trigger the most interesting discussion.
“Using the Span system and HDL300 system together enables the students to gain insight into each other’s thought processes at a deeper level, making the collaboration experience richer,” said Ian Fogarty, 12th-grade teacher at Riverview High School. “We’re finally at the point where technology is not getting in the way of global collaboration.”
“The Nureva products demonstrate that technology can support us in developing our creative human characteristics by enabling us to work together in ways that we never could before,” said David Whyley, an education technology consultant working with Pheasey Park. “The Span system and HDL300 system are delivering something really important for young people that moves beyond the mundane drill and practice aspects of technology, and is enabling students to realize that they can use technology for something positive that makes them feel good and supports their wellbeing.”
“This exciting project exemplifies the vision we have for our products to make distance collaboration as natural as working face to face,” said Nancy Knowlton, Nureva’s CEO. “We’re pleased to see this diverse group of students using the Span system and the HDL300 system to collaborate in this way, while building relationships.”
About the Span system
The Span system is ideal for creative collaboration activities that benefit from visualizing and interacting with information on a large surface. The system transforms classroom walls into large, ultrawide interactive surfaces that display an expansive digital canvas. Learners create their ideas on their personal devices, whether a computer, tablet or smartphone, and share them in the cloud. The system draws upon familiar, simple and flexible tools already widely used in paper-based collaboration processes including sticky notes, sketches, images and flip charts. The digital canvas retains all of the flexibility that paper-based systems offer (e.g., large workspaces with persistent information) while overcoming many of the deficiencies (e.g., the awkwardness of physically moving large numbers of sticky notes, the need for transcription, storage and retention of the work, and challenges of including remote learners in the process). The Span system is available in a variety of models and configurations to suit different types of creative collaboration activities and learning spaces. For more information, visit here.
About the HDL300 audio conferencing system
The HDL300 audio conferencing system resolves the frustrating and persistent issue of poor audio pickup, especially where collaboration takes place between dynamic classroom environments with lots of activity. At the core of the HDL300 system is Nureva’s breakthrough Microphone Mist™ technology. This technology places 8,192 virtual microphones throughout a classroom to pick up sound from any location to ensure that everyone is clearly heard regardless of where they are in the room or the direction they are facing. The system uses sophisticated algorithms to simultaneously process sound from all virtual microphones to provide remote learners with a high-quality listening experience. This power is used to create a quality listening experience for remote learners with a high-quality listening experience., Continuous autocalibration, simultaneous echo cancellation, position-based automatic gain control and sound masking are constantly in play. The HDL300 system can also be used as the primary source for audio and video playback to ensure everyone in the classroom can hear instructional podcasts and videos. The HDL300 system is optimized for classrooms up to 20′ x 20′ (6.10 x 6.10 m), and is designed to work with Skype® for Business, Zoom, Blue Jeans, Cisco® Spark, Cisco WebEx®, GoToMeeting™, Pexip® Infinity Connect and other common UC&C applications.
