It was 6 months back that I began a tech talk conversation podcast format with AV and IT industry professionals to cover technology as well as trade show news and other discussions. I did a few recordings during Enterprise Connect in March with Crestron, Polycom, Revolabs and Pexip, however the first one was put together due to a press release that I received in December 2016, and a story I wrote on The Convergent Tech Blog that same month The Microsoft Surprise Surface Hit of the Year – the Surface Hub. To go along with the details of the press release, I pointed out in the story that the Surface Hub was first demonstrated at ISE 2015 (and of course at InfoComm that June) to huge attendee response, and immediately gained mass notoriety. Microsoft began to sign on a significant amount of dealers for the product, and was supported by major industry videoconferencing players such as Pexip. Yes we all know about those certain challenges that were faced by Microsoft after InfoComm 2015, however when all was resolved in early 2016, Microsoft reported this mass dealer and customer response to the product, which continued to skyrocket through the end of 2016.

I had also reached out to the PR team that sent the information to me to have some questions answered, for which they accommodated, and those questions and answers are included.

Once published, I watched the blog take off – especially on LinkedIn. It was with that I decided to reach out to the PR team again to see if I could set up a discussion with a Microsoft executive. I received information back that an executive would sit down with me to discuss the success of the Surface Hub, channel partners, markets, certain programs they were launching, as well as what their relationship with the AV industry meant to them.

I was joined on a weekday afternoon in February (it took a bit of time to put this together) by Julia Atalla, Sr. Director, Surface Commercial Marketing at Microsoft. Here is that podcast.

The Convergent Tech Talk, a new program, will focus on discussions with industry professionals about technology, innovation, partnerships, case studies and more. The first involves an interesting AV integrator case study: IVCi Creates “Collaboration Stairatorium” and More at AvidXchange™.
